Hi Guys,

These .reg files dealing with the CapLock Key

http://www.howtogeek.com/geekers/KeyboardMappings.zip

Are in a format I can not read in notepad. Is there some trick
to reading them and/or converting them to text?

Many thanks,
-T

This is weird. Originally, I was getting

ÿþW

Now it seems to work. Huh. Go figure.

Thank you for the help.

They contain non-ascii characters. Registry keys can contain binary
data - maybe these reg files do, too. Be wary of editing them with a
text editor.

Are You sure it wasn't:

because thats the (BOM (Byte Order Mark)) start of an Utf-8 file,
in which kase You must be certain that the editor You use can
handle Utf-8 files, Notepad should be able to do that.

..reg files in Windows 7 are written in Unicode-16, which Notepad should
be able to read fine. You may have trouble with a Notepad replacement
program. The Windows 7 registry will still accept eight bit ANSI .reg
files if you want to convert them.

Binary data are coded as hexadecimal bytes. REG files are always pure
text. They are intended to compatible with a text editor. The only
problem will be with using an editor incompatible with Unicode-16. There
should be no problem with the Windows 7 version of Notepad.exe. I have
had no problem reading them all with Notepad.

OK, that explains why odd characters were shown by a couple of my text
editors and not by others. Thanks for clarifying that.
