Hi,

I have been having a recurring problem ever since building my computer about a year ago. It is only when I am using the DVD drive. I hadn't used it a lot until recently but have started to use it to convert films to watch on my newly acquired ipad. I have carried out stress tests but nothing shows up. I swopped the power and sata leads around and searched for the latest drivers.

I have just swopped out the Sny DVD writer for an LG Blu ray reader/DVD writer. It was fine for a couple of hours and is starting to do it again. I have attached a minidump report and have listed some more info below. If it makes a difference the basic bundle was bought as an overclocked package. When I received it there was no overclocking so the provider talked me through the settings on the phone.

I only get the crashing when using the drive, not at any other time

Thanks for any help

Graham

Your .dmp file shows a stop error of 0x124 which is a general hardware error .

A "stop 0x124" is fundamentally different to many other types of bluescreens because it stems from a hardware complaint.

Stop 0x124 minidumps contain very little practical information, and it is therefore necessary to approach the problem as a case of hardware in an unknown state of distress.

You can read more on this error and what to try here... Stop 0x124 - what it means and what to try http://www.sevenforums.com/crash-lockup-debug-how/35349-stop-0x124-what-means-what-try

Gut feeling it is hardware but from a single DMP I cant tell.

If you are overclocking, stop, if you are running a RAID, update its driver.

Run a system file check to verify and repair OS files.

Run a system file check to verify and repair your system files.
To do this type cmd in search, then right click to run as administrator, then
SFC /SCANNOW

Read here for more information http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...e-checker.html

Let us know the results from the report at the end.

Hi zigzag,

thanks for your reply. I have done the tests you mentioned and nothing showed up. I have stripped and cleaned out the computer and reaeated all the cards and memory. Windows actually had a complete reinstall a couple of months ago. I had the problem before and after this though.

One other thing that showed after about half a dozen dumps was that it said there was a malfunctioning unknown USB device. I think it was on port 3 number 8 but I didn't know which port this was.

After connecting up and switching on for the first time it kept spinning the fans and stopping repeatedly. I swapped the memory a few more times and also left the internal USB plugs disconnected. One feeds an internal memory card reader and the other two connect to the front USB ports. They are disconnected at the moment and the computer is running.

Motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R revision 2 with 3x2gb Geil memory and a Crucial 128gb SSD for the boot drive.

I have attached some more minidumps in case it is of help as you said you couldnt do much with one.

Should I try and update the BIOS?

thanks again,

Graham

This is just a quick post of mine, but by rule of thumb, you never update the BIOS unless you absolutely have to for a good reason. It's better to wait until ZigZag replies again before doing anything like that just so that you're aware. I'll take a look through your latest minidumps.

By my tests It seems to be your Genuine Intel driver giving you the trouble.

The pattern on most of these minimumps seems to point me towards your GenuinIntel driver. I'm sure ZigZag will be helping you out soon though.

You aren't overclocking your processor are you?

Thank you for your reply Ace. I haven't tried updating the BIOS. I don't like fiddling unless I have some idea what I am doing. I haven't even tried resetting my overclocking settings. I was guided through putting the overclock settings on but aren't really sure how to make it all standard again.

I believe this board can have two BIOS settings, does that mean I can keep my overclock settings and have standard ones to choose from? If so, I don't know how to do it.

Regards,

Graham

I was wondering because I was taking a look at the stats and the frequency was something around 4000 lol. The ratio was at 1.74 I believe from the normal level it was supposed to be at which was around 2300.

I know i7's overclock really well though. I've seen them go above 4Ghz lots of times.

Edit: I was wrong, I just guessed from what I seen trying to remember the numbers
Code:
Expected Frequency: 2800
  Actual Frequency: 4000
  Overclock Ratio: 1.42

thanks for your reply.

Graham

Since the newest crash had Bluerayripper.exe running when the crash occurred, and is still blaming hardware, I would suspect that is the case. What external devices do you have, and which are unpowered (no AC adapter)?

Hi zigzag,

Nothing as far as I know. I have 3 printers with mains, netgear router and d-link switch with their own power. IPad/iPod cable, not connected to anything when problems occurred. Microsoft cordless keyboard and mouse. Internal is Crucial 128gb SSD for boot. WD 1tb for programs and backup. Internal hot swap caddy with WD 1tb for more backup. Sweex card reader.

Because of the malfunction showing up with an unknown USB device I have left all 3 internal USB plugs disconnected. Two are for the front panel USB's and one is for the Sweex internal card reader. This USB error only showed up after repeated BSOD's.

Touch wood, but it has been running for eight hours now without a crash.

I did remove and replace the internal battery and pressed the CMOS clear button, would I have lost my over clocking settings by doing this?

Another point, because the dumps only occurred when using the DVD writer for reading discs I replaced it with the Blu ray reader in case the drive was causing the problem. It did actually take about three to four hours to give me the first crash on Saturday. Could it be heat related? At the moment the side cover is still off.

Regards

Graham

Edit. Power supply is a Corsair 650w. Graphics card is a Radeon 5770

Something else the computer had always done on boot up until I managed to turn it off in the set up menu was that one of the Gigabyte utilities always wanted to make changes to my SSD drive. Didn't seem to make any difference whether I selected yes or no. Turned this off ages ago.

If you were getting 0x124 bsods and you were overlcocking I'd say you need to boost your vcore some. Whenever trying to troubleshoot BSODs always remove any overclocking.
