Watch for the freezes
if they occur only while the WD is connected - in this case you know the cause. If it freezes randomly regardless of the external drive, then you have these possible causes:
1.
RAM - must be set exactly according to its specified requirements, see them on the RAM package or visit manufacturer's site for details. CPU-Z "memory" and "SPD" tabs will show your current settings.

2. In case a RAM stick is defective it must be replaced.
Memtest sometimes detects errors, sometimes has to be run twice and with each stick separately. If you run it, run it 10 passes overnight:

3.
Power Supply can be the cause too.
