I tried to set this printer up wireless with the accompanying CD (plan to have this laptop wireless in another room and a new desktop next month) and it said I needed to visit the Brother site because the driver for Win 7 was not on the CD. So, I download the driver, but it still won't work because it's not on the CD!

You don't use the CD - you use the file you downloaded. If the file you downloaded happens to be an ISO image then you either mount it virtually with something like the freeware portion of poweriso or burn it to a CD with a product like IMGBurn. If it is an exe then just run it. Otherwise see if it has instructions. If it is a zip file then expand it and then look for any of the items I listed.

Have to get my LAN up first and I'm having trouble figuring that out. Damned old brain cells just don't click anymore.
