OK Experts,

I know you have all the info for me and I thank you for your help.
I want to update on my terms.

TIA

Control Panel > Windows Update > Change Settings.

Choose your method from the dropdown list.
Check or uncheck the other sections as you want.

Change it to "notify" and you must go to the Windows update site to
select the updates you want after you have been notified.

Simply enough, open Windows Update and select Change settings in the
left column.

In the Change settings window, under Important updates change it to
"Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install
them." This will simply notify you of available updates, but you
choose when to download and install them.

If that doesn't give you the total control you want, go a step
further and select "Never check for updates (not recommended)." With
this setting you check for updates when it's convenient for you.

Ironically, it's the people who ask these kinds of questions who are
the best candidates for leaving it set to automatically update. ;-)

You got that right. Rather than look anything up in Help Support or even
Google, they come to places like this to get the answer handed to them on a
platter. They can't even read the download screen, which will give them a
URL to use.

Thank you all for great answers. I guess I'll have to study Control
Panel much more.
