Animated gif files

My new computer came with Win 7 Home Premium. I found that when I opened
a gif file that previously had animation, the animation was no longer there.
I found
if I right click the gif file, choose Open With, and choose Internet
Explorer, the gif again
has the animation there. So, in IE I can choose Select All, Copy, and then
can paste it into an email WITH the animation intact. (using Open With,
none of the other options regained the animation except for Internet
Explorer.)

Is there a question in there?

It's up to the viewing program whether to display the animation or not.
Internet Explorer obviously does. You never bothered to mention in your
first paragraph what you viewed it with, but it obviously doesn't. If
you're emailing an animated gif to someone, it's up to them to use a
program that displays it properly. You have no control over what they
use.

I like Irfanview for viewing and simple editing of images.

I have Windows 7 Ultimate x64, and animated gifs run in IE 8,
Firefox 2, Thunderbird 2, and irfanview.

Thanks Nil. I guess I had always automatically been able to view animated
gifs on my old Windows XP computer. I never chose which program to view
them with in Outlook Express. On my new Sony All-in-one desktop with Win 7
and WLM installed, the animated gifs didn't move. I used Open With and
tried about 5 different viewers including Paint..Paint Shop Pro...MS Office
picture manager...etc.. The only one that gave me action was first opening
them in IE and then copy/pasting it in WLM. I thought I'd discovered
something great and was sharing it. Wrong.

I downloaded and installed irfanview and chose it as the program to open
gif files. Now, if I send myself an animated gif when I receive it, it
opens with animation. Thanks Nil & Dave.

Paint Shop Pro doesn't do animated gifs, at least the older versions
don't, but Animation Shop, which is included with PSP, does.

Paint Shop Pro hasn't included Animation Shop for several
versions now (possibly PSP 9 was the last to do so), sometime
after Corel took over. It was briefly a separate product but
they no longer produce it.

Thanks for the info. That's probably why I'm still using PSP 5. :-)

Windows Live Mail displays animated gifs just fine for me.

You are lucky and likely the only person on the planet who can see the
animation in WLM before you send it elsewhere :-)

When open an animated Gif in Windows Explorer, or add an animated gif to a
message, I can't see the animation itself, just a static image, unless I
check it in IrfanView or Paints Shop Pro's Animation Shop, or Internet
Explorer.
Microsoft, in their wisdom, stopped showing animations as a security measure
apparently. Very annoying, but then WLM is full of annoying 'improvements'.

Nil didn't specify when WLM showed the animation, before sending, after
sending, or on receipt. I use Thunderbird, and it shows the animation
after sending (in the "sent" folder) and upon receipt, but not before
sending. It's just listed as an attachment. Is WLM different?
