Is there a way to configure the alt-tab display, where it shows you
previews of open windows? With Win7, I see previews of open windows instead
of program icons. Problem - many open window previews look alike. WLM,
Word, task manager, anything with a white background and black text looks
so similar that it's not quick and easy to tell what is what. So, having
said that, how can I configure it to show icons (like XP did?).

Try clicking your mouse wheel. The default setting will do it.

On this computer (Win7 Home Premium) when I cycle through the previews,
the unselected windows go transparent. They are thus basically
invisible, while the selected preview's window is visible alone and at
full size.

Works for me, but I guess it's not what you want.

I don't know about your PC, but on mine when I hold down the ALT key and
press Tab, I do get a thumbnail of each window, but it also has the
program's icon in the lower right corner. Also as I press tab and
highlight each thumbnail, I see the window full screen.
