age of empires 2 conquerors resolution

so idk if anyone can help cause maybe its something that can't be changed. but on my laptop when i play the game it takes up the whole screen(its not minimized), though it only takes up the center of the screen. so the image i see is a square, and my screen is a rectangle. so on both sides of the game its just black in the empty space. hopefully i explained good enough.

anyways the options only lets me change the resolution. if anyone has played this old but awesome game and knows what im talking about and can help me, please do.
im fine the way it is now, but it would be nicer to see more.

It looks like this game has a problem with widescreen monitors, however some clever people have come up with a fix:
