Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 on Windows 7 64bit?

Can anybody kindly say if Adobe Premiere Pro v1.5 will work on Windows 7
Pro x64 ?
We do not wish to buy the latest Premiere edition right now.
The old licensed version was working perfectly on an older Windows XP
Pro PC. It is used for simple editing tasks only.
That PC is being replaced with a new machine shortly.
Hence this query - before we do any installs.

You could check the Adobe forums.

One post mentions it isn't compatible, but without elaboration (which
makes the statement useless, unless we know where the info came from).

(Some kind of sound issue.)

And in this forum, it seems someone got it to work, by using
"compatibility mode" for the executable. There is also the possibility
of doing an Anytime Upgrade if necessary, so you can run WinXP Mode and
run Premiere inside a virtual machine (32 bit).

"It will install and activate, but you won't be able to get it running
enough to deactivate it so you can load the software on another computer.
If it hangs you can remove 3 Plug ins from the Premeire plug ins folder
that seem to make it freeze. These plug ins are GPUPageCurl.AEX,
GPURefract.AEX and GPURipple.AEX this should keep it from freezing on open.
However there are still other problems that arise such as Audio sync problems
and more."

If you could disable "GPU acceleration", perhaps it would ignore those plugins.
Or maybe removing them is enough.

One reason something like that might happen, is the video card usage model
in Vista and Windows 7 is different than previous OSes. There should be
some backwards compatibility, but perhaps Premiere is trying to talk to
the cards a bit more directly.

Thanks for the very informative response.
We shall examine the issues involved but it seems likely that we will
stick on to the older XP machine till we can acquire a current version
of Premiere.

I have PremierePro CS4 on my Windows7 64bit and the CS4 is only 32bit.

I works fine.

It sure uses all the computer resources during the final trancoding to
a DVD though. The i7-970 CPU usage registers as 100%, and the
12GbRAM is up to 50% usage. If you do this all the time then extra
cooling (water?) might be advisable.

And it's the most complicated program I've ever encountered.

You might also run Microsoft's Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor.
Theoretically, it will tell you which of your programs isn't
compatible.

4 years ago I bought a Vista machine to run PP 1.5. That was 4 years wasted. Vista made my life hell.

I am retired so do not have money to throw at fixing problems.

But now I have an Intel dual core i3 laptop.

I installed Windows Professional 64 bit over the OEM system. Then downloaded XPMode from the Microsoft site.

It lets me run PP 1.5 inside a virtual machine.

This is a bit tricky and I am not yet and expert. Figuring out set up and drives and where to put things will make your brain hurt.

Premiere Pro 1.5 runs fine this way . But keeps breaking. System updates and MS checks and balances can break it. Then you must start all over again.Someday I will learn how to back it all up. Be sure to . Because it is NOT REAL and will disappear if you need to reinstall. Just Like a RAM disk we used in the old days.

That being said ; a) it can be a hard study, b) you can make mistakes easily. c) it can all go away if you make a mistake.

You have full use of your computer while PP renders! And it will be much faster than old machines. Is it as good as a new version? NO !

Will it work - YES !


Be sure to learn to set the available memory to all you can spare . You do this by opening the XPMode icon with a right click and pick "manage". You can set it up there.

The more RAM you can give it the better.

Also be sure to set up XPMode for as big a virtual drive as you can spare also. PP will need big scratch disk area. Also keep deleting configuration files you do not need as they will fill up space fast.

I tried to find info on this combination of XPMode and Premiere Pro 1.5 all over the web for 3 months. Even the pros on Premiere Pro forum of Creative Cow could not tell me.
If you do not have money you care about such things. If not ? Forget it!
