Well, if you really want to be the Administrator:

There are a couple of ways:
Open a command prompt (Run as Administrator.)
Type the following command and enter.
net user administrator /active
Log out and see if you have a new alternative login, as well as your existing one. If not, do it the long way.
Shut down the computer for a cold boot. Tap the "F8" key as you are booting.
Select "Safe Mode with networking" from the boot menu.
Log into windows 7 with your personal account that holds the administrator access.
Open a command window (START--->RUN--->CMD.exe). At the command prompt type the following net user administrator /active
Log out and log back in as administrator.

Another way
Go to Start
Type Control UserPasswords2.
Click Advanced.
Click Advanced again.
Select Users.
Select Administrator and untick the the box “Administrator is disabled”
Now log out and login as Administrator.
The action leaves you a little more vulnerable to outside attack. Not a big issue if you are confident with your anti virus control etc.

Basically Windows 7 created an Administrator account with no logon ability by default and most of the privileges have been set to this account. What Davehc is telling you would give that account logon ability.

That would work but I would consider maybe just downloading the Take Ownership script and maybe turning off UAC (User Account Control).

You run the script against system folders you are locked out of by default. Please be careful as this is designed to protect your system files, etc and now you can mess things up.

I have been there myself so I know how frustrating this is!

If you are running a program from the start menu then the first thing to try is right clicking the entry and selecting 'Run as administrator' from the context menu.

The sneaky way to run the command window with administrator rights is to type cmd in the start menu search box then press the key combination <Shift><Control><Enter>.
