I have a version of Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit and want to install the 64 bit version. Do I have to buy the 64 bit version or can I get it for free and how?

Before I get all the questions - no I didn't get a 64 bit version with my software it was part of a system deal.

Thanks all help appreciated

If I understand your last comment correctly (32bit ready installed?) then I am afraid you may have to purchase the 64bit. But whoever you purchased from will have the 64 bit version also (They are on the same dvd) so all you need from the seller is the install dvd. If he is unable to supply that, I would suspect a fishy deal!

Did your system deal include an OEM Sticker on the back of the computer?

All you need is the Install Key. The install key will activate either bit version. If you did not get an Install Key with your purchase, I would suspect a fishy deal.

Possibly with this THREAD and a copy of W7 Pro 64 from this THREAD you can create a disk which will allow you to install Ultimate 64. If that is too complicated or you can't get it to work, then generally the original manufacturer (Dell or whoever) will sell you an install disk as Dave mentioned.

But as Clifford mentioned, you will need your key so if you don't have a sticker with it printed on it then you will need a product like SIW to look it up within your current OS.

I've seen some new systems with the 32 bit version of Pro & Ultimate on both eBay & Amazon recently. They only come with reinstall discs, not a full version one.

There's many Dell Vostro's setup like this, brand new. I don't understand why they place 32 bit Windows 7 on a computer capable of running 64 bit, though. Mabye it's optional (for extra money) to get 64 bit.

Because it reduces the total cost of the system for the North American buyers who frequently only want the lowest possible price.
