Laptop has 4gb ddr2 of ram. Has sound on windows xp 64bit but unfortunately when i tried windows 7 64 bit, there is no sound produced. Then tried to alternately remove one of the memory and whoala, there is sound. I have already downloaded the latest driver from Acer and even from Realtek but sigh... still have the same issue. Also found out the same issue with vista 64 bit. Please help! THanks!

I'm a little confused, do you mean you get sound when you remove a stick of memory from your laptop?

Do you know which chipset your sound card uses? I couldn't find it by googling.

Yep, whenever I remove a stick of memory, i get a sound. I also googled and found this - http://answers.yahoo.com/question/in...0030604AAnjfKc
it seems i'm not the only one having problems with this model of acer.

How strange - I'm don't understand how memory will only effect the sound.
If you need the extra memory - Perhaps something like this will help until a fix has been made.

USB 2.0 AUDIO Input/Output Sound Card for XP and Vista
USB 2.0 Speakers Digital Sound with USB 2.0 Sound Adapter

Hi, inoisikoiski

I am confused along with some of the other members that have replied here as to why you get sound when you remove a stick of memory from your Acer Laptop.

Perhaps you can try this as a test. Go into device manager and find your sound driver and upgrade the driver from there. This has worked for me when things don't work as they should.

I would love to get to the bottom of this as it is very confusing.

ino is right, reduce ram to 3gb or less and sound works fine. Update BIOS fixes the issue. BIOS always needs to be considered when diagnosing hardware issues.

Ugh!
Your first mistake was getting an Acer.
If you can take it back, RUN to the store.

If you have personal opinions keep them to yourself.
If you have an idea on how to help feel free to post.

Every company has lemons.
My personal opinion since you mentioned yours.
There are far worse companies than Acer.

Acer is no.2 in the world http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Desktops-an...uarter-712223/

My Aspire 4736z is less than half the price of my Macbook and I can still run OSX!
