Hey everyone,

First post for me here. Had a question that seems to be fairly common but haven't found a post that has my specific situation.

I got the Home Premium 32 bit OS upgrade (i was running Vista home premium prior) with student discount but need to upgrade to 64 bit to run a few Adobe programs. The install disc I got is just 32 bit, I just double checked to be sure. I saw I can get the Professional 64 bit upgrade from Microsoft with student discount for around $80 but I am not sure if I can use it to upgrade from Home Premium 32 bit.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Hello LFC and welcome to the forum.

To go from 32 to 64 bit, you need to do a fresh install, you cannot upgrade Vista 32bit to Win7 64 bit.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply Kalario.

I should have been more clear that I am currently running Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit and was running Vista before that. I am looking to get to 64 bit from 32 bit to run a few programs that require 64 bit OS. So I will be trying to get from a windows 7 32 bit to a windows 7 64 bit. It doesn't matter to me what version (home premium, pro, etc.), just as long as it is 64 bit.

Thanks again for the response!

Also, I don't mind a fresh install. I guess I just need to know if an upgrade from microsoft will work from home premium 32 bit to any 64 bit version. I would rather buy an upgrade than a fll version just to get to 64 bit.

You already have a Windows 7 Key so all you need is the install media. Use the download links found on this page ( Windows 7 ISO – Official Direct Download Links ) to download the 64-bit version you need.

32-bit and 64-bit uses the same keys. Changing from 32-bit to 64-bit only needs a fresh install with the same key.

Wow that's great to know, thanks Clifford. Answers my question.

I see that they only allow you to install once on one machine. I suppose that removes any chance of doing a dual boot with the 32 bit and the 64 bit as separate operating systems?

Can you do it? Yes. Are you supposed to? No.
